Relaxing when away from the job is done a variety of ways by different people. A relaxing trip to the beach or a day at a museum may be the best way to unwind for some people. However, a hiking trip outdoors allows for physical exercise and a chance to see the beautiful sights outside.
Depending on the trails you plan to hike, the type of terrain and environment vary, you will need to consider different apparel. While a groomed trail may allow you to hike in a pair of athletic shoes, T-shirt and short you will need to wear items with more durability in more difficult environments. If you plan a short walk on a groomed trail or a more strenuous adventure off trail, most people agree that the proper footwear is most important.
While a good fit is tantamount in a Trail Hiking boot, they also must provide support and stability. You should be able to move your toes easily and not feel any pinching when wearing the boot. Make sure that you footwear is waterproof as well. Many of the new style boots use a lining designed to wick moisture away from your feet and prohibit outside moisture from getting in.
If you are waterproofing the leather watch for the type of waterproofing you use to do the job. Some types of waterproofing are wax based and will keep the boots from breathing. It will be best to use a silicon based treatment for waterproofing as it will do a better job and not restrict ‘breathing’.
Hiking footwear has come a long way and is very diverse to meet different types of terrain. For light hiking on a groomed trail, you can find hiking sandals, a bit more rugged than a normal sandal. Also, the popular hiking shoe is available, which is great for Trail Running. Hiking shoes are usually light weight and flexible, perfect for groomed trails or light off trail work. As you can see, hiking footwear has evolved into more than just the standard, stiff brown boot!
Noting the weather and the environment you will be hiking in, you should wear appropriate clothing. While shorts and a light shirt will be fine on a groomed trail when it’s warm out, they will not be adequate on off trail hikes. Consider pants and long sleeved shirts to protect your skin from scratches and abrasions.
To make your hike safer and easier for you, there are other items you should consider. Taking the weather conditions and environment you will be hiking in you will need to remember plenty of drinking water. If you plan to hike for a set amount of time, it’s important to remember a ladies or men’s sports watch to keep track of the time. A 1-hour hike is easy if you check your watch often and head back after 30 minutes have elapsed. Also, it is best to carry a cell phone with you, just in case it is needed.
